MAX Vegas

Well, it’s that time again - seems like only a few months ago Adam and I were out in Anaheim at last year’s MAX. Was a great experience - learned a bunch and hung out with some awesome people.

Sounds like this year there is a decent contingent from A-town heading over there, so hopefully I’ll have a chance to run into everyone while out there! (Also looking forward to restaurants that don’t close at 9:30 pm…among some of the other Vegas perks.)

We’ve also been fortunate enough to have a project we worked on nominated for a MAX award this year, so be sure to stop by the booth and John, myself or some of the other folks can tell ya everything you want to know about it ;0)

Software Process

Good to see my friend Carl get all up on his blog lately and talk about what it means to have a Software Process. He’s a Java developer by trade but I think most any developer can utilize the principles he covers. Most recent post is about what good packages are all about and how to maintain them (quiet from the peanut gallery).

A good overview and hopefully just one of many great posts to come. Stay tuned for future developments….

While over at Coudal Partners seeing their reaction to the Agency.com Subway video I found an old video from 2003 entitled ‘How to Barbeque a Man’… Is it wrong that I have a warm place in my heart for lighthearted short films about cannibalism?

While over there, check out their mini-doc on screenprinting, or their interviews with Geoff McFetridge and Andy Mueller… Always a wealth of neat stuff over there.

Google, MTV and Superdistribution

Wow, my last post was in April… Now I’ve got a case of ‘non-blogging’ guilt… I’ve got a good excuse though, at work we’ve been busy getting lots of projects out the door, plus a couple more pretty big/cool ones that will hopefully be done in a couple weeks.

Anyway, back to the point… Came across Interesting article over on GigaOm about the long awaited realities of Superdistribution, where any user can redistribute content and get a cut of the expense for doing so. One only needs to look to Brightcove to see another early example. The verdict is out who is going to become the first major players in the arena, but I think Adobe is very well positioned to take advantage of the situation. Although, when Google buys a film company I’ll know we’ve entered an alternate universe ;0)

I’ll be FITC’n Ya… (especially Actionscript Developers)

In Toronto for FITC and actually got here early enough to head to the Supermarket Gallery show. Some interesting works and was good running into a bunch of folks I saw at MAX05 and even some guys I went to school with. Seems like its gonna be a great event already! From what I’ve seen this is a pretty cool town, although not sure how much time I’ll have to do much sightseeing…

Also want to take the time to let anyone who is interested know that IQ is looking for a couple more good onsite and freelance Actionscript developers. If you think a pattern is a style of fabric, or a Singleton has something to do with match.com, this is not your cup of tea. If you like doing large scale stuff in flash building frameworks to accomodate lots of video, then hit my mobile, email mraymobile@mathewandamanda.com. I’ll give ya a shout and try to get together with you here in Toronto!

Sweet MIDI Interface

Ever since I did work with iCube and MAX/MSP a while back, I’ve been hooked on the idea of MIDI devices to communicate with software applications. The monome 40h is a nice little programmable interface that can be used for a host of uses, although the video demos its more mundane use. Not sure if you can sing control signals to the interface or not, but imaging playing Simon on this sucker:

100h - a 16 by 16 grid for a total of 256 elements

Cycling74 also has a more flashy video/touchscreen interface called The Lemur if you feel like plunking down $2500, but personally I like the simplicity of the monome’s dedicedly low-fi approach and alleged $500 price tag.

Maybe the future will look like those cheesy old sci-fi movies after all!

Why I feel compelled to take and furthermore post such silliness escapes me, yet I do so anyway… Perhaps I want to cultivate a viral internet nerd meme?

Wow. Maybe it was the permeating knowledge of the periodic table that did it… Hey, I can’t help that myself and the remainder of my HS Freshman science class were FORCED to memorize the Element Song and recite it IN CLASS… a gateway to nerd-dom for sure.

It’s also amusing I have known people MUCH more nerdy than myself, I guess they have ascended to status of Nerd God and are beyond such infintile tests that state the obvious.

Sweetwater Brewery - FREE BEER

For anyone not fortunate enough to be familiar with Sweetwater 420 (or any of their other brews), and who happen to be convenient to Atlanta, I strongly suggest the brewery tour for some FREE BEER on Sunday. Apparently their new tasting rooms are finished just in time for the new Hummer Ale…
